Ledges

I have fished ledges for years since they hold fish. One of my quotes is “I fish fish”. Basically I hunt for fish or fish holding structure. Reservoirs have fluctuating water levels and the wave action will create ledges which becomes structure.

I used to find the ledges with sonar and they will show up as step. The problem with this method is I have a difficult time understanding the entire ledge outline. Lately I have been using the StructureScan to see the ledge. Once you scan one you realize the advantages immediately. Now I can create waypoints on the key spots on the ledge and drive right to them.

This image shows the ledge as a drop-off on the DownScan and the sonar.

The side scan image shows the contour of the ledge. With the HDS you can use the arrow keys to move a cursor to any place on the ledge and create one or more waypoints. Notice the shadow of the ledge on the left side and the white line on the right. This is because the sound cannot “see” the back side of the drop-off and it hit the wall of the drop-off on the right so it reflects better and causes the bright line.

This side scan image has many trees, fish and boulders but that will be another story.
