DownScan Target Separation
Bass
Fishing around boulders works even if you don’t see any fish. The boulder provides a much stronger echo than the fish so all we see is the boulder if the fish is close to the boulder. I was reviewing some of my Down Scan and traditional sonar (Sonar) recording together since the HDS records StructureScan (side and own) and Sonar at the same time. I play them back to understand the new technology as I usually understand what the Sonar is displaying. I noticed more fish on the Down Scan than on the sonar display. The Down Scan separates target better than the traditional sonar. I think it is because the higher frequency transducer and the narrower cone. The Down Scan does not show arches but blobs for the display. The next example shows the different shape of the cone angles for traditional 2D sonar and DownScan Imaging sonar. These are just rough guesses as I don’t have the exact figures on the DownScan cone.

This is a boulder pile with bass and bait around it. In this situation the DownScan Imaging™ gives me a clearer picture of what is under the boat.
